Personality

First Impression (others have of you): A brisk hawk-like woman with an overwhelming passion for Quidditch
General Behaviour: Xiomara Hooch is a brisk, feisty, sharp-eyed woman with a no-nonsense attitude. She loves flying and Quidditch and takes both very seriously. She used to play professionally as a Chaser with the Holyhead Harpies. She is also of the attitude that if you are going to do something, you should do it properly or not at all. Although she was a Slytherin and pureblood, she has no interest in any of this blood purity rubbish. In her experience, blood purity doesn’t make any difference to how well someone can fly so why should it affect anything else. Besides she’s quite fond of Muggle sports. Basically she’s a bit of a sports nut whether it’s Muggle or magical.

Underneath her brisk, even slightly brusque exterior is a woman who cares deeply for her friends and family and loves teaching the students to fly, trying to share her own love of flying and of the sport of Quidditch. She can be surprisingly kind and gentle under the right circumstances, as Neville Longbottom could probably attest.

Xiomara was their only child and as Inez died when her daughter was only six year old. Christopher was devastated but his daughter gave him something to hang on to. Xiomara got her love of all things sport from her father.

Monetary Situation: She inherited from both sides of her Pureblood family and she made a decent amount while she was playing professional Quidditch. About half of her money was in Gringotts but she also had money scattered around in various Muggle banks as well as stored at Hogwarts
Other: Xiomara continued to teach Flying and act as Quidditch referee and coach at Hogwarts until about a year and a half ago when she received a message from an old friend. The message came as a result of some discreet enquiries she’d been making. After receiving the letter, she immediately went to Minerva to ask for an indefinite leave of absence, citing personal reasons and promising to return as soon as she could. After gaining Minerva’s approval, she left her office with one last cryptic comment about returning with better news than when she left.

Xiomara had been inquiring about learning advanced flying tactics, especially combat flying. Her own father had been a member of an aerial broom squadron during the war with Grindelwald but those squadrons had been disbanded shortly after the war finished and the people in them had moved back into their lives without much of a fuss. Xiomara had been able to get her hands on her father’s old training manuals and combat journals but without someone to actually teach her, she could only go so far.

She finally found a former Broom Squadron Major to teach her, a man named David Penworthy, but he insisted on complete secrecy. The Broom Squadrons had carried out a number of highly secretive tasks during the war and had been disbanded for a reason. She spent a year and half learning how to turn the theory of what she had read into practice. She also worked with Tyson Abernathy, the genius behind the Firebolt, to create a broom designed for combat flying – one that was quick but also had endurance and was robust and able to stand up to a beating, magically or otherwise.

She has now returned to Hogwarts to take up her role as Flying teacher and Quidditch coach... and also to fight against the Lestranges and their Death Eaters. She’s not the best witch going around but by Circe she knows how to fly and even better she knows how to fly in combat.

She’s actually terrified of going into battle but forces herself to do it because she’ll be damned if she’ll let those bloody Lestranges take over the wizarding world. Anyone who sees her before she gets caught up in the battle would know, not to mention anyone catching her throwing up if she gets sufficient warning before the battle.

She nearly got married when she was in her late twenties to a Muggle. He was killed by Voldemort about a week before the wedding after Xiomara refused the offer made to join the Death Eaters. The only one who knew about this other than Xiomara and her fiancé was Igor Karkaroff, who is thankfully deceased.
